Dhaka- (UNB)– India lifted the second version of the Under-17 Asia Cup Cricket Tournament trophy with a six-wicket win over hosts Bangladesh in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday (Saturday).

Promising opener Ashraful played a superb innings of 89 runs to enable the home side make a fighting 225 runs for 6 wickets in stipulated 45 overs.

Later, Ashraful did a brilliant job on the field to dismiss two Indian batsmen with a run out and a spectacular catch.

But his effort was not enough to cope with the Indian top orders who showed solid batting performance to reach the target making 228 runs for four wickets with eleven balls to spare.

Ashraful was adjudged player of the tournament by Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association (BSJA).

Number four Indian batsman Monish Mishra was adjudged man of the final by former Bangladesh captain Raquibul Hasan.

The right-handed batsman returned to the pavilion contributing 51 runs off 61 balls with his team needing only 13 runs to win the battle with six wickets in hand. Earlier, he took the important wicket of Ashraful.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Nafeez Iqbal took the right decision to bat first.

But one down Nafeez, a dependable batsman in the squad, was run out in suicidal fashion. This shattered the home side’s possibility of amassing a huge total against their fancied rivals.

Nafeez, nephew of former national captain Akram Khan, also showed lack of temperament as leader in using his bowlers properly. In particular, he called spinner Arif Hussain at a wrong time.

The Indian opening pair of Sachin Dholpure and Parthiv Patel gave perfect start to their innings, but hosts came back brilliantly dismissing two openers in successive balls and put the opposition under pressure.

But Arif Hussain relieved the Indians giving away 12 runs in his first over with Monish hitting a huge six over the cover area.

The Indian openers added 97 runs in the stand before Sachin was run out by a direct throw of Ashraful from point. The right-handed batsman scored 50 runs off 59 balls with six fours and a six.

Skipper Parthiv followed his partner in the very next ball when Ashraful took a spectacular catch at point off left-arm spinner Manjarul Islam Rana delivery. Parthiv made 40 off 48 balls with five hits across the rope.

Deepak Chawgule and Monish Mishra denied the local bowlers to make any further damage with a 93-run association in the third wicket stand. One down Deepak scored 46 runs off 64 balls with seven magnificent boundaries.

ASK Varma was the other notable scorer with unbeaten 21 runs off 26 balls that featured two fours and a six while Stuart Binny remained not out with 5 runs.

Earlier, Bangladesh made respectable 225 runs for six wickets in fixed 45 overs thanks to Mohammed Ashraful and Hasibul Haq.

The two batsmen contributed 88 runs in the third wicket stand after losing two wickets for 59 runs.

Ashraful made 89 off 85 balls with 11 boundaries before caught at mid-on by Shankar while trying to drive a mistimed shot against Monish.

Wicket-keeper Hasibul scored 52 runs off 87 balls with two fours.

Kuldip Rawat, Shankar Rao and Monish Mishra captured one wicket each while three Bangladesh batsmen were run out.
